Shephard's been doing his best since encountering the little jadeblood grub. There aren't a whole lot of troll childcare manuals out there. Mostly he's been working from the premise that what worked for him during Cubefall should probably work now, which is why there's a cocoon-tub-thing in what little floor space of his room isn't taken up by notebooks and Mrs. Wilson. Got to keep the sopor slime somewhere, it's not like he's going to let the grub sleep someplace he can't keep an eye on her.

Thing is, she's worse than a cat. No matter where you put her down to sleep, sooner or later you wake up with the little wriggler huddled up on top of your blankets.

Oh well. He'll deal. He's exhausted enough not to give a damn after a week of child care and cheerful threats and profanities (trolls get schoolfed, he vaguely remembers that, but that's no reason not to teach her a little vocabulary, right?).

So, yeah, he's probably snoring at the moment. He does that sometimes.

The grub that's been in his care is, in fact, snoozing on top of Shephard's chest, having made something of a burrow in the blankets before she settled to sleep. Both are snoozing contentedly until a certain ripple of magic moves through the building.

Suddenly, that little grub isn't so little anymore, and she's flailing with an alarmed chirp as she slips off of her perch.

The thing is, the something big, unknown and actually quite dangerous when she wants to be, is the baby.

There's a hand grabbing her and she's grabbing right back before Kanaya's brain un-fogs enough for her to look at what's going on. Thankfully, she now comes with her own illumination.

"
...Shephard?
"

Safety somewhat ensured, Kanaya allows herself to roll off of Shephard and land on the floor with a quiet thump.

"Fuck," she says eloquently, rubbing at her temples. "What Happened?"

She, sort of remembers, now that Shephard mentions it. It's fuzzy and indistinct like most childhood memories are, and it comes with a wave of custodial affection so keen she's reaching behind her and grasping for his hand before she can check herself.

'Your Lusus is dead', a part of her reminds her. 'and you failed her, remember?'

'My Lusus Is Also Behind Me,' you think back, frowning thoughtfully at the new emotions.

Shephard's talking, she realizes this faintly through her thoughts, but she can only muster a faint noise in agreement, hand still squeezing his.

"Not Sure Yet," she admits, her voice small.

She doesn't know if she should mention things to Shephard. That he's essentially been adopted as a Lusus. She's not even sure if this is permanent, it could be that this is just some remnant of whatever it was that turned her into a grub in the first place.

Even if it is, this is sort of an extreme sort of nonstandard. And she's the one with Flushed feelings for a human.

Oh.

That doesn't help matters, however well meaning. It just...doesn't smack of the wrongness that sometimes comes with humans and their pity, when it edges towards Moirallegiance.

This is something else entirely, and it makes something inside her twist painfully and she turns her head towards him as best as she's able, to where she can hide her face against his arm.

Embarrassingly, a sob bubbles out, then another.

The real icing on the embarrassment cake, really, is when a strained "Dad" is choked out amongst everything.

Kanaya is moving before he even stops talking, scrambling back up onto the bed and shaking.

It's like everything has come loose. Everything she's had to set aside for continued survival. Sgrub, the meteor, Eridan and Gamzee, the whole mess with Karkat, Fucking Gamzee.

Reflexively, the hands clutching at his shirt are flexing, a little reminiscent of tiny, crawling grub claws.

No grub, but a troll in it's place, as last night provided. Currently, she's still asleep in said pile, curled into a tight ball underneath the blanket she scrounged up last night.

It looks like that next step may be figured out soon, because the troll is starting to wake.

Kanaya shifts a little bit in the pile, slowly drifting to the surface. Part of her half-expects to wake up back on the meteor, curled up with her Matesprit in whatever they've managed to scrounge up.

She realizes how wrong that is, when reality slowly begins seeping in, and she sits up, rubbing at her eyes.

She's watching him closely, and a little anxiously, for any sort of sign in regards to her outburst last night.

"Yeah," she says, moving to get to her feet. "It Was Alright."

"It's Alright I-Uh..."

Kanaya hasn't quite figured out what to say either, it seems.

Well, there's the behemoth in the room.

"I-" the troll's mouth works soundlessly for a moment. "It May Not Be The Best Time, But It Probably Should Be Addressed."

She's just not sure how to begin, really.

"Which Bits Are You Sure Of, Then?"

They have to start from somewhere, after all.
